News of the discovery spread around the world when the undisturbed tomb was unearthed of a powerful Moche ruler, who had lived on Peru’s northern coast long before the emergence of the Incas. Huaca Rajada, a Moche pyramid, was the place chosen to safeguard the remains of this sovereign.

The Lord of Sipan was adorned with remarkable jewelry fashioned from gold, silver, turquoise and Spondylus shell, and he was accompanied by women, children, warriors and animals, who were all sacrificed so they could join him in the afterlife.

At Huaca Rajada an exact replica of the tomb can be seen, revealing the complex funerary rites employed by Moche culture, and their belief in an afterlife.
