This is - probably - one of the most iconic and romantic places in the city of Lima. It is located in the bohemian district of Barranco, known for its rich cultural history and artistic atmosphere.

 

This iconic wooden pedestrian bridge was built in 1877 out of the necessity to connect both sides of the ravine. Its architecture is simple and spontaneous, standing at 8.5 meters in height, 44 meters in length, and 3 meters in width.

 

Over time, the Bridge of Sighs became one of the most romantic spots in the city of Lima and became an inspiration for numerous legends, songs, and poems.

Very close to the Bridge of Sighs, you will also find many tourist attractions, and here are some of them.

 

La Ermita Chapel – At one end of the bridge, there is a chapel known as La Ermita, built in the mid-18th century. In 1882, it was reconstructed after being devastated by a fire.

 

Chabuca Granda Monument – The illustrious Peruvian singer and composer who wrote the waltz “Puente de los Suspiros” is immortalized next to her horseman, representing another of her famous waltzes called “José Antonio”.

 

Bajada de los Baños – Below the bridge, you will find this cobbled street, famous for its old houses, bars, art galleries, and restaurants. It is a must-visit for visitors.

Barranco Square – Just a couple of blocks from the Bridge of Sighs, it is a popular place for cultural events and artistic performances. Here, you will find street performers and a lively atmosphere.

 

The viewpoint – A construction set on the edge of the cliff. From here, you have a beautiful view of the sea and much of Lima's Costa Verde. Watching the sunset from here is a wonderful and unforgettable spectacle.

 

How to get there?

 

There are different routes you can take to reach Barranco, depending on the starting point. One of the most recommended ways is to use a taxi app, specifying "Puente de los Suspiros" as the destination, with reference to the Barranco district.

 

 

Another option is to use public transportation. You can take the Metropolitano (bus rapid transit system) heading to Barranco and get off at the “Bulevar” station. From there, you can walk to the Bridge of Sighs, which will be a short distance away.

 

Lastly, if you are in the Miraflores district or near Barranco, you may consider walking to the Bridge of Sighs, as it is a pleasant stroll allowing you to enjoy the charming surroundings of the district.
