The San Francisco Church is located in the Historic Center of Lima and is one of the most iconic and touristy sites in the city. It is a tangible example of colonial architecture and art in the country.
The construction of this architectural treasure was carried out by the Franciscan order and was completed in 1774 after a century of work. The complex is a monumental and architectural ensemble unique in the world, consisting of the churches of San Francisco, La Soledad, and del Milagro, with their respective cloisters, courtyards, catacombs, and dependencies.
This monastery also houses a valuable artistic legacy gathered over more than four centuries. The library safeguards an impressive collection of 20 000 books in various languages, including Bibles, theological treatises, and choir books crafted in lamb leather or parchment. Additionally, there is a complete world atlas and the first dictionary edited by the Royal Spanish Academy.
Church style
The predominant architectural style is Baroque and Neoclassical. The church's facade is impressive, with imposing columns, ornamental details, and religious sculptures carved in stone. Its design is an excellent example of Peruvian colonial style.

Inside, it features decorated altars, religious paintings, and sculptures displaying religious art from the colonial period. The main nave stands out for its carved wooden images and altars.
One of the remarkable spaces is the choir room, composed of 130 seats admirably carved with Baroque-style reliefs from the 17th century. The cedar wood used in construction was imported from Costa Rica. In the center of this room is an elegant rotating lectern that used to keep the enormous choir books, allowing priests to interpret musical notes written on parchment with large letters.
The convent also houses a library and a historical archive containing a valuable collection of documents and ancient books, some dating back to the early colonial years.
Catacombs
One of the most fascinating aspects of the San Francisco Church is the underground catacombs. These were used as a cemetery during the colonial era and contain thousands of human remains. Today, the catacombs are open to the public as part of a guided tour, offering a historical and unique experience.
Guided tours
Guided tours are offered to tourists, including visits to the church, the convent, and the catacombs. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history, architecture, and cultural significance of this place.
