Piura Highlands
Although it is probably one of the least known areas of Piura, it has various attractions that you should not miss. One of them is the Huaringas Lagoons, located in the province of Huancabamba. Every year, thousands of tourists come to this place attracted by its esoteric "powers" and healing properties.
Continuing in Huancabamba, you will find Canchaque, known as the "Switzerland of Piura." This city has been declared the tourist capital of the Piura region. It offers attractions such as the Chorro Blanco waterfalls, the Huayanay hill, and the Mishahuaca hot springs. The latter stand out for their water "tubs" formed by the erosion of the rock.
Piura and its craftwork
Another great attraction of this region lies in its craftwork, an activity that stands out for the beauty of its work and as an economic driver in various cities like Catacaos. Located 12 km from the city of Piura, Catacaos is renowned for its cotton textiles and, especially, for its filigree work in gold and silver, as well as its straw hats made from toquilla palm. The latter two are recognized as Cultural Heritage of Peru.
Also in Catacaos, you will find the Huaca de Narihuala. This clay construction, reaching a height of 40 meters, was the home of the mystical Walac god and is guarded by the legendary "viringo" dog, recognized as Peru's distinctive dog. According to recent research, it was a settlement site of the Tallan culture, a pre-Inka civilization that inhabited the Peruvian coasts.
Exquisite dishes
Lastly, but not less important, is Piura's gastronomy. Notable dishes include Grouper Cebiche, Seco de cabrito (stewed goat), and Seco de chavelo. The latter is prepared with boiled and mashed green bananas, to which seasoned meat, tomato, Peruvian red pepper, and onion are added. It is also possible to savor delicious lobster, black clams, and the ever-present chicha de jora (fermented corn beverage).
