The heart of the Peruvian Amazon beats every time adventurers visit San Martin. This northern region of Peru holds nature in its purest form: you can explore trails surrounded by vegetation and wildlife and suddenly start hearing a deafening but calming sound of water falling forcefully, and, in turn, revitalizing.

This region contains unique natural gems in Peru, so if you enjoy adventure, a warm and mild climate -depending on the area- and being surrounded by beautiful landscapes with abundant vegetation, San Martin is the right place to plan your next vacation. From the imposing Ahuashiyacu waterfall, going by the Blue Lagoon or choosing Lindo Lake as your next destination, you will never regret visiting this beautiful land.

However, San Martin is not only synonymous with nature. In this region, there is also room for many other historical and cultural activities. To start this adventure, the first thing you should do is to reach the city of Tarapoto (founded in 1782 under the name of Santa Cruz de los Motilones de Tarapoto), the capital of the province of San Martin and, in turn, the most important district. The reason? Everything happens around Tarapoto.

Tarapoto is home to the most important airport in the region, which even serves as a connection point for other destinations in northeastern Peru. It receives flights from Lima (the transfer from Jorge Chávez International Airport takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes) and offers a varied range of accommodations with the highest quality standards, restaurants with the most acclaimed local dishes, and travel agencies that will offer you several options of adventures during your stay.

In the Main Square of the city, you can learn more about San Martin through its craft center, which houses textiles, ceramics, and jewelry, among others, with local motifs. Another place to appreciate and shop is the archaeological complex of Gran Pajaten, in the district of Chazuta, where artisans create and exhibit decorative pieces that attract the attention of foreign tourists. These ceramics have been declared Cultural Heritage of Peru.

The adventure begins at the Ahuashiyacu waterfall, located 15 kilometers from the city of Tarapoto, in the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area. This waterfall, situated near the high jungle, has an approximate height of 40 meters, and its decoration of ferns, orchids, flora, and fauna makes it even more beautiful. If you want to be surrounded by calmer water, you should visit the Blue Lagoon and Lindo Lake, where you can spend great moments as a couple or with your family and practice some water sports.

Travel to the city of Rioja to enjoy boat rides on the source of the Tío Yacu River, visit the Mirador del Bosque de Proyección Alto Mayo or the Santa Elena Ecological Reserve, and embark on an adventure in the Palestina Cave. You can also head to the city of Juanjui for a guided tour in the Abiseo River National Park or to discover the benefits of cocoa through the Cocoa Route and its agricultural areas.
