What was the meaning behind these collective burials? Why did the Chachapoyas build them on a rock wall high above a ravine? And their colors? What do the motifs mean? Why do some of the tombs have pitched roofs, as if to protect them from the rain?
According to archaeologists, these mausoleums are replicas of the houses in which the ancient inhabitants of the area lived.
While many questions remain unanswered, what can be said with certainty is that the effort required to reach this almost inaccessible place 2 800 meters above sea level is amply rewarded!
