Peru is starting the year with good news. The jury of the Green Destinations association - as part of the ITB Berlin 2022 awards - has selected four Peruvian destinations as sustainable success stories.
The places chosen are the Tingo Maria National Park, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the Colca Canyon and Gocta - Kuelap, making Peru the only country having 4 destinations in this award.
Sustainable and paradisiacal places
Of the four destinations chosen by Green Destinations, three are located in the Peruvian Amazon. The first one standing out is Pacaya Samiria, located in the Loreto region, is the second largest protected area in Peru. It is home to an important variety of flora and fauna species, including the paiche and the pink dolphin. It is also home to several families that use its resources thanks to their ancestral practices.
Tingo Maria National Park, located in the department of Huanuco, stands out for its biological wealth. It is home to more than 170 species of birds such as the cock-of-the-rock. Among its main attractions are the Sleeping Beauty, Tres de Mayo and the Cave of the Owls. The first is a mountain range that resembles a woman lying down. The next is a tourist circuit where you can observe an orchid garden and butterfly farm; as well as waterfalls with 3 waterfalls. Finally, this cave houses stalactites, stalagmites, mantles and columns formed over thousands of years, in addition to a significant number of guacharos (oilbirds), bats, insects, among others.
For its part, Kuelap stands out for being an imposing fortress of the Chachapoyas culture. Located in the department of Amazonas, it has administrative, religious, ceremonial and residential spaces. All protected by retaining walls that are up to 30 meters high. Now you can access this city thanks to a cable car that allows you to observe and admire the ingenuity of the ancient Peruvians who managed to build this construction in the heights of the Amazonian mountains.
Another paradise located in the Amazon region is Gocta, which - thanks to its 771 meters - is considered one of the highest waterfalls in the world. It is a destination that can be reached on foot, that is why it still maintains the harmony that only nature can provide. Around it there are moors, ponds and waterfalls.
Arequipa stands out in this list thanks to the Colca, one of the deepest canyons in the world. A destination full of tradition, culture and customs, home to the famous and spectacular Andean condor. Watching its flight is an unforgettable experience. Located in the province of Caylloma, it allows you to practice various adventure sports, as well as the practice of experiential tourism.
