Christmas and New Year’s celebrations are just around the corner and one wonders what we can give as a gift on this special date. With this in mind and to spread the traditions of this region, HP and Peruvian artisans joined forces to create a digital Christmas card collection.
Among some of the postcards -which can be downloaded from the free HP Printable platform- is the traditional Ayacucho altarpiece, made by artisan Gabriel Ataucusi, who expresses his more than 30 years of experience in this unique piece full of art, colors and passion.
Another piece that is part of this collection is the traditional family of Ayacucho shepherds accompanied by the emblematic llamas, vicunas and alpacas, animals native to Peru. This work of art was made by Leonidas Orellana, an artisan specializing in ceramics using the ancestral Wari technique from the Ayacucho region.

Artistic expression of the Peruvian Andes
The Ayacucho’s altarpieces represent one of the most important artistic expressions of Peru. They portray popular festivities, religious manifestations, ancient customs and events that have marked the history not only of the Andes, but of all of Peru.
Its origin goes back to the arrival of the Spanish who brought some wooden crates in which figures of saints were observed. And it was the Ayacucho artisans who adopted the techniques of modeling and sculpture, and adapted this cultural heritage to their own customs.

Capital of Peruvian craftwork
Founded in 1450, Ayacucho stands out for its wealth of craftwork. Ceramics, silverware and textile products are its main attractions. In addition to being home to 33 churches, among which there stands out the cathedral dating from the eighteenth century.
Among other tourist sites are the San Cristobal temple -the oldest in the region- and the San Francisco de Asis (Saint Francis of Assisi) temple -which houses a vast collection of colonial canvases.
One of the great celebrations of this region is the Carnival of Ayacucho - a festivity that takes place during February - and the Ayacucho Holy Week - one of the most important in the country - are artistic heritage that every tourist must experience.

Interesting facts
Since November 2019, the city of Ayacucho has been part of the Unesco Creative Cities Network, which brings together a group of cities that base their development on creativity, whether through music, crafts, popular arts, design, film, literature, digital arts or gastronomy.
