Because they are eco-friendly tourism places that have a minimal impact on the environment and local culture, the Green Destinations organization has nominated 9 Peruvian destinations so that the public can award their favorite 100 best practices story of 2021 at the Green Destinations Story Awards at ITB Berlin.
The selected locations are:
- Alto Mayo, Tarapoto
- Colca Canyon, Arequipa
- Gocta - Kuelap, Amazonas
- Tingo Maria National Park, Huanuco
- Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Loreto
- Tambopata National Reserve, Madre de Dios
- Sandia & Bahuaja Sonene National Park, Madre de Dios and Puno
- Bosque de Pomac Historic Sanctuary, Lambayeque
- Lake Titicaca, Puno

Peru, a country of sustainable destinations
It is no secret that this South American region stands out in the world not only for its gastronomy, but also for the beauty of its destinations. Peru has everything visitors need to be in contact with nature. Proof of this are the 9 nominated destinations.
Starting in the Peruvian Amazon, Pacaya Samiria stands out, with an important variety of flora and fauna species, among which the paiche and the pink dolphin stand out. Tambopata is home to 632 types of birds, 103 amphibians, 169 mammals, among other species. Nearby is Bahuaja Sonene, which -within its more than one million hectares- is home to 20 thousand species of flora and close to a thousand animals.
Alto Mayo is a natural protected area that preserves 182 thousand hectares of forest. Kuelap stands out for being an imposing fortress of the Chachapoyas culture with administrative, religious, ceremonial and residential spaces. Gocta is not far behind and, thanks to its 771 meters, is considered one of the highest waterfalls in the world. The Tingo Maria National Park stands out for its biological wealth. It is home to more than 170 species of birds such as the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

The Peruvian coast is present with the Bosque de Pomac. This attraction protects the largest number of carob trees on the planet and is home to more than 80 species of birds in the wild.
The Peruvian Andes are represented by Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world (3,812 m.a.s.l.), and the Colca. In Lake Titicaca, there are a group of islands (Taquile, Amantani and Uros, among others) where the customs of their ancestors are still practiced. For its part, the Colca is considered one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is also home to the famous and spectacular Andean condor. Watching its flight is an unforgettable experience.
Interesting facts
The ITB Berlin Convention is the global event with the restart and recovery of tourism as its core content. It will take place physically and virtually, feature live broadcasts along with a 24-hour program and provide a platform for business, networking, content and dialogue, with its physical and hybrid trade show booths.
