- Beautiful images of folk art from the Huancavelican region in the Peruvian Andes will be exhibited for the first time during the Christmas festivities presided over by Pope Francis.
A traditional Peruvian nativity scene made on a real scale - representative of the Chopcca community in Huancavelica - will be appreciated, for the first time, in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican during the celebration of Christmas 2021. Starting December 10 and for 45 days, the world will have the opportunity to see this traditional representation of Christianity with Peruvian motifs.
The Peruvian nativity scene has more than 30 pieces of popular art and imagery, meticulously elaborated by five renowned artisans from Huancavelica, which will be the central attraction of the famous square, located in the heart of the Catholic Church.
It is estimated that, during its stay, the Andean nativity scene will be seen by more than 100 million tourists and media followers who will be attentive to the Christmas celebrations at the Holy See.
Every year, the world waits with great excitement to know which country, among all the countries, will be chosen by the Vatican State to represent Christmas and accompany the Holy Father during this significant religious feast that invites peace and unity among human beings. This 2021, it will be Peru's turn.
Chopcca Nativity Scene
Characters such as the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the Three Wise Men, the baby Jesus himself, and the shepherds, will be made of ceramic, maguey, and fiberglass, and will also wear the typical clothing of Chopcca, a peasant community that was declared in 2014 as Cultural Heritage of Peru for its originality, representativeness, and importance within the Andean culture.
Like all rural nativity scenes, it will include local fauna such as llamas, condors, alpacas, vicuñas, sheep, vizcachas, and flamingos (parihuanas), recreating a section of Huancavelican nature and architecture, using typical materials from the area.
The nativity scene from the community of Chopcca will be presented to Pope Francis as an act of gratitude from Peru for the decision made by the Vatican itself that this Peruvian nativity scene and its beautiful rural Andean setting will be presented in St. Peter's Square to be the symbol of universal Christianity for Christmas 2021.
