This destination was honored in the thriving communities category, which recognizes a sustainable destination for its biodiversity, work for the benefit of communities and commitment to caring for the environment.
Peru received a new international award. On this occasion, the Tingo Maria National Park, located in the department of Huánuco, won second place in the Green Destinations Story Awards, held at the ITB Berlin 2023 fair. The destination participated in the category of thriving communities, thanks to its inspiring stories and the example of a sustainable destination that its communities maintain.
The winning story “Tingo Maria National Park, conserving its biodiversity and ecosystem services for the benefit of the population”, describes how communities and park management identified and developed three new commercial opportunities for their benefit, implementing sustainable practices.
One of them is the sustainable use of butterflies as a natural resource for the production of handicrafts, souvenirs and accessories. Protocols for raising and extracting melipona bees were also identified for the production of honey and pollen with medicinal properties and their sale in eco-stores.
Finally, local crops such as coffee, cacao, banana, passion fruit, camu camu, lemon were used for the production of artisanal ice cream, thus linking agricultural products to the tourism sector.
An unmissable destination
The Tingo Maria National Park is located 6 kilometers southwest of the city of Tingo Maria, in the districts of Mariano Dámaso Beraún and Rupa Rupa in Huánuco. It is one of the oldest protected natural areas in Peru and is made up of the mountain range of Sleeping Beauty, and it has been developing amazing strategies to integrate local wealth with the conservation of natural resources.
Historically winners
The Green Destination Story Awards are a showcase of the most inspirational initiatives for sustainable tourism development and award 6 categories based on the stories submitted to the annual Green Destinations Top 100 Stories 2022 competition in which Peru won 9 awards.
The Peruvian destinations considered among the top 100 are the following: Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, Manu National Park, Paracas National Reserve, Tingo Maria National Park, Colca Valley, Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Tambopata National Reserve, Bosque de Pomac Historic Sanctuary and Alto Mayo Tarapoto.
In addition, the Bosque de Pomac Historic Sanctuary in Lambayeque was also nominated for the Green Destination Story Awards in the category of Governance, Reset & Recovery.
