Peru's ongoing endeavor to become a sustainable and safe tourist destination is producing favorable outcomes. In the 2023 Green Destinations Story Awards, eight Peruvian destinations were recognized during a special ceremony hosted in Tallinn, Estonia.
These destinations are diverse and exemplify Peru's natural and cultural diversity: Cavinzas and Palomino Islets, Puno (province), Machupicchu Historical Sanctuary, Los Órganos, Tingo María National Park, Lachay National Reserve, Titicaca National Reserve, and Paracas National Reserve.
Every one of these destinations carries a unique story of dedication and unwavering commitment to sustainability. Their recognition in these awards stands as indisputable proof of the achievements made in the pursuit of more responsible and eco-friendly tourism.
Below, we present each of these fascinating destinations.
● National Reserve System of Islands, Islets and Guano Capes – Cavinzas Islands and Palomino Islets area: Situated in the coast of the Constitutional Province of Callao in Peru. They are renowned for being the main dwelling place of marine birds such as seagulls, pelicans, boobies, and Humboldt penguins, as well as for their abundant marine ecosystems, rendering them an excellent choice for activities like diving and wildlife observation.
● Puno (province): Located in the high-altitude Andean region of southeastern Peru, Puno is globally recognized for hosting Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. It is equally celebrated for its abundant cultural heritage, traditional festivals, music, and dances. Additionally, it is distinguished by its floating islands crafted from totora reeds, which are inhabited by the indigenous Uros community.
● Machupicchu Historical Sanctuary: Placed in the Cusco region, stands as one of the most iconic tourist destinations, both in Peru and globally. It shelters impressive examples of Inca architecture and is celebrated for its profound archaeological and cultural importance. This site has received the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site designation and is recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
● Los Órganos: A beach resort located in Piura, on Peru's northern coastline, renowned for its idyllic beaches and exceptional waves, offering an ideal setting for surfing enthusiasts. The region has abundant marine life, including whales and turtles, fostering responsible and regular wildlife observation tourism that strictly adheres to rules to ensure the undisturbed coexistence of this animal life.
● Tingo María National Park: Situated in the Huánuco region and celebrated for its striking geology and grand landscapes. This protected natural zone presents chances for trekking and observing wildlife in the midst of forests, mountains, and caves.
● Lachay National Reserve: Located in the Lima region, renowned for its desert landscapes and exceptional flora, particularly during the blossoming season when the desert bursts into colorful flowers.
● Titicaca National Reserve: This region covers a portion of Lake Titicaca and its surrounding areas in the Puno region. It serves as a significant habitat for waterfowl and wildlife and is renowned for the floating islands of the Uros and Taquile Island. Here, indigenous communities uphold their longstanding ancestral traditions.
● Paracas National Reserve: This reserve is located in Ica, on the southern coast of Peru and is known for its diversity of marine life and coastal birds. The rock formations, cliffs, and the Ballestas Islands, where you can observe sea lions, penguins, and a wide variety of seabirds, stand out above all.
