It is time to set the table, place a good spoon and taste a delicious Chupe de camarones as a celebration, since this spectacular, tasty and traditional dish from Arequipa was chosen as one of the 20 best soups in the world by the international news network CNN en Español.
Through an article titled These are 20 of the world’s best soups: is your favorite one included? the CNN en Español website made a count of the best thickened soups around the globe. Among them, the Chupe de camarones stands out, a popular dish from the Peruvian south that has gained followers over time for its unequaled flavor and hearty portion, since traditionally this soap is served in a deep dish.
“From the Mexican Menudo or the Peruvian Chupe de camarones to the Ukrainian Borscht, look at these delicious photos of 20 of the world’s tastiest soups,” was the description with which they opened the note on the website of CNN en Español. This distinction by the famous international news network strengthens the perception of Peruvian gastronomy abroad, since recently, in December 2021, the South American country was awarded with the prize of World’s Leading Culinary Destination by the World Travel Awards 2021.
In addition, the renowned portal TasteAtlas included Cebiche, Anticuchos de corazón and Arroz chaufa in its Top 50 worldwide. Travelers have it clear: if you want to taste first-class food, with a wide range of possibilities as big as delicious, Peruvian gastronomy will meet all your expectations.
Finger-licking good
The Chupe de camarones stands out for its texture, spiciness and, obviously, its main ingredient: river shrimp. It also contains ingredients such as cheese, yellow potato, milk, beans, rice, egg and corn. This ancient dish was served to combat the cold during pre-Hispanic times, but it evolved until today’s presentation due to the Spanish influence on Peruvian cuisine.
In Arequipa, there are countless restaurants that serve this reddish soup, which are commonly called picanterias (cheap restaurants specialized in spicy dishes.) Here, traditional and ancient Arequipa dishes are served, so if you travel to this southern region, we recommend you to taste some of its wide menu. However, this is not the only reason why a tourist could travel to Arequipa.
If you like outdoor adventures, you have to visit the Colca Valley, where the also famous Colca Canyon is located, considered one of the deepest in the world (4,160 meters.) In 2019, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the Colca Canyon along with the Andagua Volcanoes as a world geopark.
Interesting facts
Within the 20 world’s best soups chosen by CNN en Español, only two were from South America, which makes the choice of Chupe de camarones within the list more praiseworthy.
